we knew it was inevitable that our mini mash would be mobile before we knew it, what we didn’t count on was that his mobility would be in a race with beej’s desire to make a bespoke baby gate for the stairway. since we had the wooden slat wall installed during the big renovation a couple of years ago, we knew we would have to customize part of a gate to get it to function properly, but leave it to beej, a pile of maple, a bit of hardwoods for a latch, and his hand tools to make something perfect and completely non-ugly and non-plastic (plastic and ugly seems to be the criteria for gates these days).
he challenged himself to make this a power-tool free project, and the results are just fantastic. the design echoes the other linear elements in the house, it’s solid as solid can be, and we are thinking we have maybe 6-8 months before puddin’ figures out how the latch system works. (and yes, there is a plan b and plan c for switching that up when the time comes).
